GFWC Woman's Club of Indio is hard at work - oftentimes so much so that we find ourselves in the news.   Look at what we've done!

A little bit of hard work and a whole lot of fun!

GFWC Woman's Club of Indio

President Mickie Reed Presenting the ESO Mini Library

ESO is put the finishing touches on our Mini-Library which is now installed at the Indio Food Court on Miles Avenue at the corner of Smurr Street in Old Town Indio.  We are in need of books to stock the library, especially books written in Spanish and children's books.  We will have a book collection on Friday, March 5, 2021, at 5:00 pm to 5:30 pm, at Walgreens on Jefferson and Fred Waring, and also at Dunkin' Donuts on Jackson and Ave. 42.  Clean out those shelves and drop them off ... you could lose hundreds of pounds in just a few minutes!

Yard of the Month Winners Announced!

March 2021:  The Yard of the Month program is off to a GREAT start!  Since our program's inception, WCI has partnered with the Indio Water Authority to show appreciation for the community's effort to beautify the city and honor conservation efforts.  We continue to recognize homeowners who demonstrate superior effort in maintaining their property and who contribute to the overall appearance of Indio.

This month the Silva Family wins and it is a family effort.  Five years ago Mrs. Silva and her family worked together to make their home water and energy efficient. Mrs. Silva reported that once she converted to a yard that is all decomposed granite, that the upkeep of her yard ranges from once a week to every fifteen days (depending on the weather).  In this photo the decomposed granite is now an amazingly five years old. Jokingly, Mrs. Silva stated that the money she saves on her water bill she now spends on flowers for her front and back yard.

Recognition Chair Bernadette Subia-Martinez would love to hear from you about homes deserving praise for their terrific curb appeal.
If you would like to nominate a great yard, or even your own, contact Bernadette at [email protected].

WCI Celebrates Valentine's Day with the Staff and Residents of the Indio Nursing and Rehabilitation Center

February 13, 2021:  GFWC hosted a fun Valentine’s Day Party for the Indio Nursing and Rehabilitation Center yesterday. Every resident and every essential worker received a Valentine’s Day card and some yummy treats!

Good job members! Your efforts both making cards and making or buying goodies made many lonely people and their dedicated caregivers feel loved and remembered.

If you would like to participate in any of our ongoing Indio Nursing & Rehabilitation Center Facility efforts, contact Marcia Daniels at [email protected]

WCI Votes to Support Four New Organizations

July 2020:  Four projects, recently approved by our Board of Directors, are now being supported by GFWC Woman's Club of Indio.  These long-standing Coachella Valley non-profits are dedicated to improving our community and they are in need of our help. Read the following information about these worthy organizations to find out how you can help with in-kind and monetary donations.

Coachella Valley Foster Kids

This organization provides suitcases with personal items for foster children, who are often removed from their homes with absolutely nothing. We need donations of new or gently used suitcases, travel bags, and backpacks. For more information on how you can help, contact Rosalind Miller.

Girls Love Mail

Girls Love Mail is an organization that provides uplifting support to people with newly diagnosed breast cancer. Until we are able to meet in person, please write cards or letters from home! Find the Guidelines, FAQs, and Details at Girls Love Mail or contact Bonnie Tucker.

Indio Nursing & Rehabilitation Center

We were asked to participate in a pilot program for the adoption of a skilled nursing facility. One in our city that has critical need for support, for both staff and residents, is the Indio Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. We need members to write letters and cards, make phone calls, provide cookies and treats, and donate items. For information, contact Marcia Daniels

Alzheimer's Association Coachella Valley

There are many ways to get involved to help support local programs for families impacted by Alzheimer's and to volunteer and fundraise for research to eradicate all forms of dementia: Walk to End Alzheimer’s, participate in The Longest Day, and be a community educator or representative. Contact Sylvia Baran or visit Alzheimer's Association.

WCI Resolution Supports the USPS

June 2020:  The members of GFWC Woman's Club of Indio overwhelmingly voted in June to adopt a Resolution supporting the United States Postal Service ("USPS").  The United States Post Office was established in 1775 and is Constitutionally required to serve all Americans, regardless of geography.

Under this Resolution, WCI asks legislators to support the CARES Act and the USPS Fairness Act to provide financial relief and security to the Postal Service.  The Resolution has been sent to the California Federation of Women's Clubs for vote and upon approval, to be sent to the General Federation of Women's Clubs to encourage the entire Federation of Women's Clubs across the US to support this initiative.
